Draw an imaginary vertical line from the point the ear wire attaches down to the bottom of the earring. If you could make an imaginary crease along that line and fold the earring over, would the edges line up? That's symmetry.
In the daily course of human events the symmetry of your earrings (or lack of same) means little. It's only when you lose one that it becomes an issue. You can replace your lost earring with either right or left earring of a second pair if the design was symmetrical. If it wasn't, you need to find the specific directional replacement. And that's going to be harder, especially if you can't find an intact second pair.
